Faux Pas

Kudos: Recognizing Your Employees, Direct Reports, & Colleagues

When was the last time one of your employees or reports was recognized? By you? By another colleague? In front of other people?

Make it a habit to share “kudos” at whatever your appropriate time and place may be. Depending on the size of your organization, that could be board meetings, it could be administrative meetings, or it could be a town hall.

Even better than recognizing your direct reports is recognizing someone else’s. There has never been more cross-departmental work going on; you’re almost guaranteed to work with someone new and have the opportunity to recognize their contributions. Let their supervisor know how great they are.

We of course want to encourage people to advocate for themselves and be proud of calling out their own spectacular work, but having that work recognized from an outside party does a few key things: (1) it’s a morale booster for them, and (2) it tells you something you might have missed.
